The Dark Oak Roughout article is the perfect combination of a heavier-weight leather with a soft, forgiving characteristic. This is a true roughout article, meaning it is full-grain leather, but leather is turned inside out, using the flesh side for the surface. Since the full-grain side is still intact, the leather has its structure and strength while offering the waxed suede texture for the unmatched character.

Variations of the Chelsea boot have been a staple worldwide for nearly two centuries. This slip-on pattern dates back to the early 1800s as a riding boot, which is how it originally earned the 'Paddock boot' name. Only in the mid-1900s, when the boot was popular in England, was it referred to as a Chelsea, a district in southwest London.

This pattern carries over to multiple categories. It's easily dressed up or down, and in certain parts of the world, it's a preferred style for work boots, given the closed pattern and slip-on practicality.

The Grant Stone Chelsea is a combination of these categories. The goal was to find a balance between the Western and refined look. It will fit the bill as the work-horse boot or the daily commuter. Most importantly, we used strong, proven components to ensure longevity.

The UK last fits half a size large and has a fuller fit throughout, similar to our Leo last.

Variation is expected as this article is the antithesis of a cookie-cutter article.

  • Goodyear-welt construction
  • Oiled/Waxed Roughout from Charles F. Stead

Chelsea Boot - Dark Oak Roughout

$395.00

Made with

Goodyear-welt Construction

Renowned for its durability and ability to be resoled repeatedly, Goodyear-welt construction involves stitching a welt—a strip of leather—around the shoe's perimeter, creating a cavity. After filling the cavity with the shank and cork, the sole is attached, providing strength and water resistance. This construction method results in shoes that are not only long-lasting but also easily repairable, making them a timeless investment in quality craftsmanship.

Built on the

UK Last

The UK last draws inspiration from the classic black Chelsea boots of the Beatles. Featuring an aesthetically elongated and sharper toe expression, the UK last provides the sophistication of a sleeker European last while still providing moderate arch support and breathing room for your forefoot.

Very Impressed - Dark Oak Roughout

"These boots are excellent quality and look amazing. I am exactly a size 8 on the brannock device and after trying a 7. 5D, I had to size down 1 full size to a 7D to get a good fit. Grant Stone support made the exchange process simple and easy."

Jeremy (5/5)

Great quality at a reasonable price point!

"I’ve seen lot of reviews of this boots on you tube and most of them are positive. I always wanted a versatile boots that I can wear almost anywhere and almost every occasion. It did not disappoint. My only issue with this pair of boots is the sizing, when I should have ordered 1 size down instead of half. Anyway, it can be solved by adding anther layer of insole."

Vincent M. (5/5)

Boots for life

Brett H. (5/5)

Great boots when you dial in the sizing

"Love these boots. The design and leather are great. Just be aware that they run a bit big. I have flatter feet that are lower in volume. So, while my feet are a 12. 5 brannock (I wear a 12 in the Leo last), I wear an 11. 5 in these with a very thin leather insole added. These have a fair bit of volume, and how they fit will depend on your foot volume and instep (high or low). But once you get the fit dialed in, they’re great. Highly recommend."

Michel W. (5/5)

Earth Waxed great boot

"Great looking boot. Even better in person"

Susan P. (5/5)

Superb

"This is my second pair of Grant Stone Chelsea and the boots haven't disappointed. I bought them at a discount price as part of Black Friday sales. I own a pair of RM's Comfort Craftsman boots, but I love the look of these more. The only advantage the RM's have is that I can get them repaired through RM Williams here in Australia, whereas I would have to find a decent cobbler if I ever have to repair these GS's. Having said that, these boots are built like a tank and I don't think I will need to see a cobbler for at least 4 -5 years the way these are built. I highly recommend Grant Stone Chelsea Boots!"

Ralph D. (5/5)

Best Chelsea boots at this price point

"I have not had these Chelsea's for long, but my first thoughts are what a great boot for the money! The roughout is gorgeous and the fit is generous. I sized down a half size from my Brannock measurement and it's still generous. I wear these with a full cushion hiker sock from Darn Tough and it helps with the slippage, which is inevitable with Chelsea's. For those who criticize the whole made in China thing, get over it. ALL the components are sourced from outside China and the craftmanship is top notch. Seriously, you will not find a better Chelsea at this price point. My only concern is maybe I should have went down a whole size as I like to wear lightweight, cushioned socks. Oh well, that's something I can absolutely live with!"

Timothy C. (5/5)

New Chelsea Boots

"This is my third pair of Grant Stone Boots. They reinforce my belief that GS is the best value in Goodyear welted boots. The stitching, leather quality, and overall construction are excellent."

Scott B. (5/5)

Better every time I wear them!

"I bought these to be stompers - boots I could pull on and go and do anything from walk the dog to go shopping with my wife to the trails. The Grant Stone Dark Oak Roughout Chelsea does it all! For me they were comfortable straight out of the box and by the end of the first wear they'd settled perfectly to my feet. They're already a first-grab in a closet with a *lot* of shoes and boots. And the more I wear them, the better they got - not only for comfort but the leather is evolving too. I'm a 12D Brannock size, but have a Crimson Chelsea in 11. 5D that fits great, but asked about an E width, and was advised to try an 11E. I was honestly a little skeptical, but they fit perfectly! Slightly more volume than the 11. 5D, but no problems with length at all. I love 'em already!"

Q&A

Does the Dark Oak Chelsea ever come in EE width? I see it as an option in other colors but not this. I see a similar question was answered, but vague on exactly when. Any updates?
As you mentioned, we will begin selling the Earth Chelsea in EE this summer and we will have this Dark Oak Roughout available in November or December. We will offer the Black Calf Chelsea in EE next year as well. We suggest signing up to be notified by email when they become available as you'll be amongst the first to know.
When the wax eventually wears out, what product can I use to restore it? Thanks.
To restore the wax: Using a brush that has firm bristles will help keep dust particles off and even out scuffs. Since the leather surface has a matte finish, it holds this look even after a lot of heavy wear. Scuffs and dings tend to look more natural. The tannery recommends applying a WP beeswax/dubbin to restore if it begins to look dry over time. From our own experience, we’ve used Neutral Venetian and seen great results. We suggest starting with a little amount (not on the vamps at first) and working up from there.
Can you give me some quick pros and cons for the two waxed CF Stead leathers? The Dark Oak Roughout vs the Waxed Commander?
Hello James, The two leathers are similar to the point that there are not many pros and cons that will differentiate the two. It will come down more toward a personal preference of if you want something waxier (then Waxy Commander leathers) or something more like a mildly waxed roughout (such as the Dark Oak). If you are wanting a leather that will age and become more rugged over time, the waxy commanders are going to be your friends. I hope that helps!
hello - can I order the Chelsea boot in dark oak rough out in size 10-1/2 E ? thanks
Unfortunately, we only offer our Chelsea Boot in Dark Oak Roughout in a D-width. Later this year, we are introducing EE-widths for the UK last which would be a great last for you to try out!
